Day Ayorinde stormed UNILAG for Musicologists

 

It was an occasion that will continue to linger in the minds of both students and the audience that stormed the premises of University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos last week for the 14th International Conference for Nigerian Musicologists as the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, dazzled with his poetic speech.

Titled “Need to focus more on indigenous music in the country”, the commissioner submitted that, if care is not taken, indigenous music will go into extinction just as the language is doing presently. He advised music schools and colleges to look at their curriculum again, re-jig it to reflect more of indigenous music.

Also, the national President of the association, Professor Femi Adedeji, canvassed for unity among all music associations in the country. This, he said, will bring a good collaboration among artistes in the country.

The event which was witnessed by top musicologists in the country, including Professor Laz Ekwueme, Vidal, Adeolu Okunade, Loko and the Head of Music Department of University of Lagos, Dr. Soji Stephen among others came up with recommendations on how to move indigenous music to the next level.

Yoruba Heritage Awards (YHA), a prestigious award that promotes African Culture in diaspora, is set for its 2016 edition. The event which started in 2008 have since honoured sons and daughters of Nigeria who have contributed positively and immensely to the Yoruba community through their professions and businesses.

The 2016 edition, according to the Director of Publicity of YHA 2016, Mr. Akin Sokoya, will take a new dimension as the event will last for three days. The first day of the event, Thursday, October 20, 2016 avail the organisers the opportunity to meet the New York City Mayor, Borough President and visit Wall Street and the World Trade Centre.

On Friday October 21, 2016, the organisers will have business meeting with New York City Chamber of Commerce and also be on a tour of New York City. There will also be children Excellence Awards and Talent show between 6pm and 12 midnight.

There will be pre-award event on Saturday, October 22, between 2pm and 6pm, while the awards dinner nite comes up between 7pm and 2am at Laguardia plaza, along Laguardia Airport 104-04 Ditmas BLVD, Brookly, New York.

The past editions of the Yoruba Heritage Awards held in United Kingdom; Atlanta Georgia (USA) among others and the subsequent YHA shall hold in Dubai, South Africa, Holland, Germany and Nigeria.

The Nigeria teams for YHA 2016 are Goke Adekonye, CEO, Yoruba Heritage Awards, Dare Adesuyi, Director General, Jonathan Ojah, Director of Marketing, Lere Adesuyi, Nomination Director, and Akinyele Sokoya, Director of Publicity.

It was a new dawn last week in Lagos when Mrs. Morenikeji Dayo Olaiwole was ushered in as the new chairman of the esteemed Ikeja District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountant (ICAN).

On ground at the investiture ceremony was former chairman, Mr. Joshua Oderinde, Mr. Olalere Ilori, Mr. Rotimi Omotosho and other important personalities.

Speaking at her inauguration, Mrs. Olawoile gave God the glory.

She said: “The Holy Bible teaches us that in all things we should give thanks. Today is indeed a day of thanksgiving to the Almighty God who has made it possible for us to be alive to witness the 29th investiture ceremony and inauguration of 2016 /2017 executive committee of the Ikeja district society of ICAN”.

It was all merry making and joy last Sunday as Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion Christ Church Anglican Elere, Agege rounded off in double celebration.

While the church was sending forth their Vicar, one of the elite club in the church, Young Morning Star celebrated its 33rd anniversary.

To add glamour to the celebration was Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Oderinde, Dare Kodaolu, Engr. Jaiye Adewusi and his wife and Oba Olusegun Ogunneye and his Olori.

Speaking after the ceremony, Venerable Christopher Ola Ayejoto said: “I feel fulfilled. In fact, I enjoyed every minute of my four years I spent with you. I really appreciate you people, if I have my way, I will not go, but I have to”.

Afro Music is taking over the world gradually as International musicians are beginning to adopt the amazing African sound into their music.

International artiste, Ms. Bodega, a New Yorker of Israeli/Middle Eastern/Spanish descent, has collaborated with Nigeria’s Afrobeat /Dancehall Sensation, Timaya, and producer, Young D with another World Music titled Watta.

Watta is an Afro-American music which is already taking over the international airwaves gradually. The music was inspired by the late Afro music King, Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s ‘Watta E no get Enemy Song’.

The song is produced and recorded with super producer, Young D, in Nigeria and has a mix of African rhythms and melodies.

The video of Watta was shot in Nigeria by Unlimited L.A and is fast spreading over global airwaves.

Ms. Bodega’s sweet soothing voice and Timaya’s raspy Afro-pop flare took it to another level. Representing several countries and cultures around the world, the song and these artistes are expected to reach a global audience by storm.
