Danjuma commends North East students for resisting Boko Haram menace

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on the North East Initiatives, Lt. Gen T. Y. Danjuma (rtd), has commended students under the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI) for their resilience and strive to continue with their education despite the menace of Boko Haram sect.
Danjuma made the assertion Monday in Zaria during the SSI monitoring and evaluation visit for 3rd Term.

Gen Danjuma, who was represented by the Vice Chairman of the PCNI, Tijjani M Tumsah, commended the students of the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Zaria when he met with the management, staff and students of the school.

During the interaction, Tumsah encouraged the students to be steadfast in their studies and also praised them for their resilience.

“We are committed to your welfare and will continue to track your academic pursuits so that you can be better citizens and assets to your families and the society in general.”

The Principal of FGGC Zaria, Dr. Asmau Y. Abdulkadir, said there has been a great improvement in their reintegration in the school and also their learning assimilation.

According to a statement signed by its Head of Media and Communications, Alkasim Abdulkadir, the exercise was aimed at, among other things, the welfare of the students benefiting from the programme as well as to ascertaining the success of the Student Transfer Programme since the last Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) exercise in July 2017, and also identify the constraints faced by the schools and students under the programme with suggestions on how to alleviate them.

The M&E team engaged the school management and students and also conducted focus group discussions and key Informant Interviews.

The analysis of the findings will inform the operational priorities and policy directions that will improve the Safe School Initiatives (SSI).

Recall that the insurgency in the North East has adversely impacted region’s education system with over 1,100 schools destroyed across the region and about 600 teachers killed since 2010. A total number of 43 schools are currently under the SSI programme.

As a result of the menace, some students from the region were transfered to other schools in other locations which were safer to enable them continue with their education.
Some of the schools visited include Federal Government Girls College Bauchi, Federal Government College Azare in the North East. Others are FGGC Bida, FGC Minna, FGC Illorin and FSTC Kuta-Shiroro.

Other schools include FGC Kwali, FGC Keffi, FGC Ugwolawo, FGGC Abaji in the North Central; and FGC Zaria, FGC Kano, FGC Kaduna, FGGC Gusau, FGC Sokoto and FGGC Tambuwal in the North Central.
