Dangote Refinery Achieves Fuel Self-Sufficiency for Nigeria; Production Hits 661,000 bpd
In a significant move for Nigeria’s energy landscape, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has transitioned into a high-output phase, supplying between 60 and 65 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) daily.
This surge in production effectively satisfies the national demand and creates a surplus of up to 20 million litres for export, signaling a new era of fuel self-sufficiency for the country.
Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, confirmed that the refinery has established a structured offtake framework with selected major marketers to ensure stable nationwide distribution.
By exceeding Nigeria’s average daily requirement of 50 to 60 million litres, the facility aims to eliminate the supply bottlenecks and recurrent scarcities that have plagued the downstream sector for decades.
During a high-level visit to the Lekki facility on February 21, 2026, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Engr. Bayo Ojulari, lauded the refinery as a transformative national asset.
He highlighted that the plant has surpassed its original design expectations, reaching a live production parameter of 661,000 barrels per dayexceeding its nameplate capacity of 650,000.
Engr. Ojulari noted that the refinery’s ability to “leapfrog legacy industrial constraints” through world-class technology is a source of national pride.
Analysts expect this transition to domestic refining to conserve billions of dollars in foreign exchange, stabilize the naira, and significantly improve Nigeria’s trade balance by positioning the nation as a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
