Damagum says Atiku’s exit normal, temporary setback

The National chairman of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum on Friday described the recent resignation of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as a normal occurrence.

Speaking in Bauchi, Damagum who also stressed that Atiku’s exit from the PDP is a temporary setback, reasoned that it was not the first time the former Vice President had left the party.

The PDP national chairman who added that such moves are not unusual in Nigerian politics, assured that the PDP remains committed to its founding ideals.

He stated that the party is also working assiduousely towards addressing internal challenges, not just within the PDP, but also across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Ambassador Damagum emphasized that the PDP is focused on strengthening its structure and unity, while also repositioning itself ahead of future political contests.

The former vice president of the country, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had in a recent letter addressed to the Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, resigned his membership of the party, citing irreconcilable differences as the reasons.

He had also expressed disappointment with the current direction of the party, which he said has strayed from the vision and principles upon which it was established.
