The Daily Times, a national heritage- Egbunike

The Group General Manager of the Daily Times newspaper, Mr. Olisa Egbunike, on Monday, described the newspaper as a national heritage that must not be allowed to go into extinction.
Egbunike stated this while receiving Miss Nigeria Pageant contestants from the 36 states at the Daily Times complex in Agidingbi, Ikeja-Lagos.
He said the newspaper, which began operations in 1926 in spite challenges, will continue to remain a credible medium of balanced reportage of events and issues in Nigeria.
Egbunike also informed the Miss Nigeria Pageant contestants that the Daily Times Newspaper’s archive is the biggest in Africa.
He said the archive, which is open to members of the public, is one of the mainstream of the company in sustainability and generation of funds.
Egbunike also stated that the newspaper, which was one of the first companies to be privatised by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, having been acquired by Folio Media Group, has since then been contributing its quota in nation-building.
He noted that one of the challenges facing the media industry in Nigeria, as well as other countries, is the advent of social media.
“Instead of buying newspaper, readers now go online to read most of the news,” he said.
He also said that the newspaper is growing in quality as it employed quality professionals to head key positions.
Also speaking, the Editor, Daily Times, Ms Rose Moses, told the Miss Nigeria Pageant contestants that the journalism profession is improving unlike when it was dominated mainly by men.
“We now have more females in the profession even at the top echelon,” she said, adding that anyone wishing to come into the profession must be driven by passion.
She promised the contestants that when next they come visiting, there would be a remarkable difference in the company.
The excited contestants who marveled at the physical structures and activities of the oldest media house in the country, applauded the management for its ability to resuscitate the newspaper.
