Customs Intercepts 20 Transit Containers Worth N769.5 Million in Kano

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully intercepted 20 transit containers across the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, with a total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N769.5 million, as part of its ongoing efforts to safeguard government revenue and ensure smooth trade operations.

According to Dr Abdullahi Maiwada, NCS National Public Relations Officer, the seizures were the outcome of intelligence-driven enforcement operations conducted between the second and fourth quarters of 2025, targeting irregular transit movements and enhancing compliance along major trade corridors.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, highlighted that the operations are part of the Service’s commitment to efficient transit monitoring and revenue protection, while ensuring that legitimate trade continues unhindered.

The seized containers were found to contain a range of items, including vitrified tiles from the Kano Free Trade Zone, with a DPV of N228.6 million, diesel engine oil, polyester materials, used clothing, printed and lace fabrics, medical consumables, and Zamzam bottled water. Two containers of medical consumables have already been forfeited to the Federal Government following a Federal High Court judgment in Kano on 10 December 2025, while one container remains under temporary detention pending completion of standard procedures.

The NCS also confirmed the arrest and legal processing of an individual involved in container diversion. To further strengthen transit monitoring, the agency has deployed electronic container tracking devices nationwide to ensure real-time tracking, route compliance, and operational transparency.

Comptroller-General Adeniyi reaffirmed NCS’s focus on trade facilitation, revenue protection, and efficient customs operations, urging importers, agents, and logistics operators to adhere strictly to approved transit procedures and promptly report any irregularities.
