Cultists unleash terror on Lagos residents

The relative peace in Badia community, a suburb of Lagos in Apapa-Iganmu Council area of the state was recently shattered as suspected cultists unleashed terror on its residents.

At least two persons were said to be on danger list in an undisclosed hospital, with doctors battling to save their lives following injuries sustained while the operation lasted.

Our correspondent gathered that the terror gang, led by one Sunday Ogunleye and Taiye (a.k.a Waris) stormed Sura Street at about 6.00pm over the weekend, stabbed residents at random with dagger, leaving one Toye Omose and another yet to be identified seriously injured.

The community was thrown into pandemonium as the cultists moved from street to street, attacking anyone at sight while residents ran helter shelter looking for their children; traders hurriedly locked up their stores and took to their heels.

However, luck ran against one of the bandits named Ogunleye. An eye witness said he was overpowered by some vigilante men and residents who handed him over to policemen at Badia Police Station for investigation and prosecution.

Consequently, members of the joint Community Development Associations Apapa-Iganmu chapter have petitioned the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Badia Division, urging him to ensure the arrest of other suspects and diligently prosecute them.

According to the petition, tilted “Spread of Terror, Murder, Unlawful Possession and Use of Fire Arms, Armed Invasion”, copied the Area “B” commander, Chief Magistrate, Marine Beach Magistrate Court and Chairman Apapa-Iganmu LCDA,

it was alleged that Sunday Ogunleye and his gang members have turned the lives of residents of Ireti-owoseni, Giwa Streets and its environs to a nightmare over time, terrorising the whole community at will.

In the petition signed by community leader, Prince Kayode Obadiah and chairmen of Oguntayo South, Abete, Oguntayo North, Afolabi Alasia, Apata Alasia, Orisunbare, Apata-oro, Badia Centra, Badia East, Badia West, Gaskiya West, Ogunleye was alleged to be a gun runner, who has continued to spread terror in the community, adding that there was no passing week that he has not assaulted, molested and oppressed residents with members of his gang.

While chronicling his antecedents, they alleged that “Sunday Ogunleye and his gang on the 1st day of December, 2011 at about 2.30am attacked the community and rubbed many houses, collected money and killed one Mr. Wewe on the said day.

After the intervention of Badia Police Officers and members of the community, eleven members of the gang were arrested out of which three were charged for murder.

Ogunleye, who led the gang, ran away since 2011 December, he now resurfaced to the community in July 2017 during the local government election.

His recent act that prompted this petition was the attempted murder of Prince Kayode Badia with unlawful use of fire arms on defenseless innocent residents at the end of Giwa street in August 2017, when he led Yusuf Arogundade (a.k.a Mighty), the younger brother to the current councilor of ward “C”.

They alleged further that Ogunleye and his gang members possess dangerous weapons such as locally made pistol, AK 47, dagger, cutlasses, axes with which they used to terrorise the residents.

The petitioners appealed to the police authority to urgently swing into action and mop up the cultists from the community to save residents from continuous harassment, maiming and terror on innocent residents.
