Onayade stated this on Sunday in Ile-Ife, during an interview.
He said that the directive was not to punish, but for the safety of lives, adding that people must see the measure and others as public good.
The Professor of Public Health urged the people to cooperate with the government, so as to eradicate the global pandemic.
According to him, government alone cannot fight the spread of the disease without the cooperation of the people.
“The stay-at-home order, social distancing, washing of hands with soap, using hand sanitiser among others, were not forever, but for a while,” he said.
Onayade also called on the people to be generous to the less privileged among them, especially during the period of the lockdown.
He explained that there were people who could not afford three square meal a day without going out to work.
“Now that they must comply with the stay-at-home directive, men of goodwill, who are better off, shoud assist the needy to overcome some of the challenges,” he said. (NAN)
