Covid-19: NNCA-UK, stakeholders suspend indefinitely, planned global 2020 celebration

Following the continued spread of the Coronavirus disease otherwise referred to as ‘COVID-19’ across Nigeria and the world over, the Nigerian Nurses Charitable Association-United Kingdom and the Nigerian Nurses in Diaspora has announced that it is suspending indefinitely the planned global celebration of 2020 Year of the Nurse and the Midwife.

The Association in collaboration and consultation with the Global Stakeholders in a statement jointly signed by its president, Princess Wendy Olayiwola- Odutola and Pastor Peters Osawaru Omoragbon, Director for International Liaison stated that the decision was in solidarity with the global fight against the dreaded virus.
The group admonish every nurse and midwife in Nigeria not only as frontline soldiers against the spread of the infection but to also act as agents of attitudinal change to respect all the protocols that have been put in place by the government to reduce the spread.
The statement read in part: “In so doing, we would love to admonish every nurse and midwife in Nigeria not only as frontline soldiers against the spread of the infection but to also act as agents of attitudinal change to respect all the protocols that have been put in place by the government especially as it relates to social distancing and obeying the lockdown order.
“We commiserate with every Nigerian at this trying time especially as it relates to meeting their financial obligations and can only hope that the government shall perform its due diligence to the citizens with mitigating actions.
“To the family of our colleagues and other Nigerians that have died from the infection, we pray God to grant you peace and gratitude to bear your losses. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
“In the above regard, NNCA-UK shall continue its virtual engagement with all nurses/midwives in Nigeria with educational and informative programs through webinars and social media on fighting the COVID 19 to celebrate and support our colleagues with skills and knowledge transfer.
“NNCA-UK with the Nigerian Nurses/Midwives in Diaspora as Global Stakeholders held the inaugural Webinar on Saturday May 23rd , 2020 with over 800 registered participants and 183 live participants with officials of the Federal Ministry of Health, represented by Dr. Bola Olowu Director PPP/Diaspora Dept FMOH,

the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, representing the Chairman, Jon Abike Dabiri-Erewa was the Program Officer, Ms Khadija Abubakar, World Health Organization was represented by Professor Stanley Okolo the Director of the West African Health Organization, the Lagos State Government by Ms Kemi Ogunyemi, Commissioner 4, in the Lagos State Service Commission,
with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria represented by Mrs Aderonke Adetunji, Director of Nursing Education, Lagos University Teaching Hospital and Chairman Education Committee of the Nursing Council Board. Participants from more than 25 countries including Hong Kong were in attendance.
“This will continue on a regular basis. Everyone will be kept abreast of a new date once this crisis abates”.
