Court Pauses Trial of Anthony Joshua’s Driver for Legal Advice
A magistrate court in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver involved in the fatal car crash that injured former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, to February 25, 2026.
Kayode, who was arraigned earlier this month on a four-count charge including dangerous driving causing death and driving without a valid license, appeared in court on Tuesday for the continuation of proceedings.
At the resumed hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that while three witnesses—officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO)—were present, the prosecution required more time.
Nigiwe requested an adjournment to enable the police to duplicate the case file and forward it to the state’s Attorney-General (AG) via the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for comprehensive legal advice.
The defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, vigorously objected to the delay tactics, arguing that since witnesses were already in court, the trial should proceed immediately.
Presiding Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun overruled the defence’s objection. She ordered the duplication of the case file for the Attorney-General’s review and subsequently adjourned the matter to February 25 to allow for the legal advice to be obtained.
The charges stem from a tragic accident on December 29, 2025, when the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode crashed into a stationary truck near the Sinoma area, close to Sagamu.
Anthony Joshua, who was a passenger in the vehicle, survived with minor injuries and was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, on December 31.
However, the crash claimed the lives of two of his close associates: Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach.
Kayode had previously been granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties but remains in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
