Couples get married hours before wedding restrictions are enforced

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell got married at Australia Zoo on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday, hours before Australia’s wedding restrictions were enforced.

9News photos showed Bindi emerging from a car, while wearing a white gown and several hours later, Bindi shared a radiant photo of the newly hitched couple on social media.

“We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now,” she wrote in a message shared on Twitter and Instagram.

Bindi explained that because her family all live at Australia Zoo, she was still able to share the moment with them. She revealed that her mother Terri helped her get ready, and as expected, her brother, Robert Irwin, walked her down the aisle in place of their late father, Steve Irwin.

Together, she and new husband Chandler lit a candle in her father’s memory.
“Today we celebrated life and revealed in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens,” she wrote.

March 25th 2020 ❤️ We held a small ceremony and I married my best friend. There are no words to describe the amount of love and light in my heart right now. We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe. We wish all of our friends and family could have been there with us, however it’s lovely that we will be able to share photos and videos. Right now we’re encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward during this profound time in history. Today we celebrated life and revelled in every beautiful moment we shared together in our Australia Zoo gardens. Mum helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears and smiles and love. Thankfully, since we all live at Australia Zoo as a family, we could be there for each other. To everyone reading this – stay safe, social distance and remember LOVE WINS!

As of midnight on Wednesday, Australian weddings can be no larger than five people including the couple, a celebrant and witnesses.

Bindi explained that while she wished all friends and family could have joined them, photos and videos from the event would have to do.”We’ve planned this beautiful day for nearly a year and had to change everything, as we didn’t have guests at our wedding. This was a very difficult decision but important to keep everyone safe,” she wrote.

It was on Bindi’s 21st birthday in July 2019 that Chandler proposed. After he presented his childhood sweetheart with a diamond ring, they both took to Instagram to share the happy news.

“She said YES! Almost 6 years ago we met at Australia Zoo,” he revealed on Instagram at the time. “I immediately fell head over heels for her kind and thoughtful heart that radiates so much light. “Proposing in her very favorite place in the zoo, surrounded by animals, seemed like the perfect way to embark on this incredible new chapter in our lives. Bee, I love you more than anything in this world and I always will. Happy Birthday.”
