Corruption Will Not Be Tolerated – Tunji Disu Vows

At the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, President Bola Tinubu presented newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu to top member of the presidency.

Speaking to State House correspondents, Disu conveyed his sincere gratitude to President Tinubu, characterizing his appointment as a challenge to bring about peace amid insurgency and banditry.

“First, the appointment means a lot to me, because I have the love of my profession, the love of the country, and it came at a time I was not expecting it, which makes me give thanks to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his magnanimity,” the clearly emotional AIGP stated.

He said he almost started crying when Tinubu praised his record: “The President’s numerous remarks about me, including the places I’ve worked and my accomplishments as a police officer, made me feel emotional.

“It demonstrates that the President took his time to keep an eye on the officers operating throughout the nation, and that he then challenged me to go out there and do what I am known for, making sure that I bring peace, recognition, and calm to the nation.”

Disu outlined his vision, saying, “My top priority for Nigeria…” I will speak with them and inform them that the people of the nation are in charge.

“It’s crucial that they understand that no police force in the world can function effectively without the support of the general public.”

“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over,” he charged the officers. I’ll make sure to teach them and motivate them to uphold human rights.

“I will make sure they understand that I will attempt to implement a zero tolerance policy for corruption, and above all, I will instill in them the belief that we can never achieve success without the public’s cooperation.”

“The country is facing a particular problem now, issue of banditry, insurgency,” he continued when discussing insecurity. I am aware that every police officer in the area has been trying their hardest. They are diligent individuals. To improve anything, all I have to do is direct their thoughts and morale.

After thanking Tinubu for mentoring him from his days as Lagos CSO to IGP, outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun stepped aside to celebrate his successor.

“I am especially thrilled to be turning things over to someone I have a special history with today. Since Mr. President’s time as governor of Lagos State, we both had the genuine honor of gaining from his guidance,” Egbetokun stated.

“A good leader should have a successor, a succession plan, and must invest in his likeliest successors,” he recalled Tinubu’s advice. I’m pleased that one of those who I invested in as potential successors to the Nigerian police force has been determined to be the best fit for the position.

“He was my PSO, he was CP in Rivers and FCT, he was AIG in charge of my SPU when Mr. President gave the order to withdraw police from VIP protection… and he did it so well,” Egbetokun explained, outlining Disu’s responsibilities.

“He should continue to show commitment to the things that we have been doing together,” he advised. “These include dismantling multiple criminal syndicates, enhancing the inter-agency deployment model, and coordinating intelligence.” He will undoubtedly keep doing that, and I am so sure that he will surpass my accomplishments.”
