Coronavirus: Ekiti assembly suspends activities indefinitely

The Ekiti state House of Assembly on Thursday announced the suspension of legislative activities indefinitely as parts of measures to contain the spread of the dread coronavirus.
The decision to restrict visitors’ movement to the assembly complex was taken at Thursday’s plenary held in Ado-Ekiti and presided over by the Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye.

The Chairman House Committee on Health, Mrs. Teju Okunyiga under matter of urgent public importance, informed the House of one found case of COVID-19 in Ekiti state and therefore, called for precautionary measures to contain the further spread of the disease.
Other members who spoke on the matter include, Mrs. Yemisi Ayokunle, the House Majority Leader, Gboyega Aribisogan and Abiodun Fawekun,(Ido/Osi Constituency 1) with the legislators suggesting that aside the assembly’s complex, public places like schools should be shut at least for now.
In his ruling, the Speaker, Funminiyi Afuye said that “activities at the Ekiti state House of Assembly are hereby suspended as suggested by members until further notice when the tension about the dread coronavirus is doused.”
He however, allayed the fear of residents, saying though the COVID-19 is real, but that the federal and state governments are on top of the situation.

Members of the assembly were advised to sensitise their constituents against social interaction, on the regular washing of hands and unnecessary handshake among others that can cause the spread of the disease in the state.
During Thursday’s session, the assembly passed the Corporation (amendment) Bill, 2020 and the law to Prohibit Discrimination against persons with Disabilities, 2020.
The passage of bills followed the adoption of the reports of the House Committees on Lands and Housing and that on Women Affairs and Social Development as submitted by the chairmen of the respective committees, Mr. Ayodeji Ajayi and Mrs. Adekemi Balogun respectively.
The assembly thereafter, adjourned plenary sine dine as moved by Gboyega Aribisogan and seconded by Mr. Tunde Idowu.
