College alumni hails Gov Emmanuel for 3,000 graduate teachers

The out-going president of Akwa Ibom State College of Education Alumni Association, Elder Edet Okpo has commended Akwa Ibom state government and governor Udom Emmanuel for approving the employment of over 3000 graduates of the college into the state civil service as teachers in various primary schools in the state.

Okpo while delivering his valedictory speech Wednesday during the handing over ceremony, also appreciated the state governor for giving the college adequate attention as witnessed in the ongoing construction of internal roads in the campus, renovation of dilapidated buildings, facilitation of courses accreditation in the institution.

He said, “I am happy that we have been able to hold a successful, free and fair election in line with the spirit of the association’s constitution, despite the challenges we had.

I therefore congratulate all the winners and wish to remind them that being on the executive simply means service to the people, so to succeed, you should serve with passion, dedication and patriotism, as was demonstrated beyond words during my tenure, we should always work as a team and agents of growth and development of the College.”

Okpo listed his achievements during his four years tenure as the president of the association to include, building a robust relationship between the alumni and management of the College, creating a sense of belonging and unity among the alumni members, building of a state-of-the-art resource centre comprising of an ICT centre, a bookshop, and lecture hall.

He said that during his tenure, the alumni association was officially registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, to enable them to contribute to the growth and development of their alma mater, as well as cater for the members’ welfare.

In a keenly contested election held in Uyo, the state capital, Mr Etukikpong Sunday Bassey was elected as the new president to pilot the affairs of the body for the next four years, while Mrs. Usiereeyo Ntekop and Akaniyene Daniel won the offices of vice president 1 and 2 respectively.

Others who also emerged victorious during the election include: Joseph Udoh, secretary general, Prince Godswill Ibiok, assistant secretary, Ukpong Ime, director of media/publicity, Enobong Udoh, financial secretary and Esin Bassey Okon, treasurer among other elected officials.

Speaking shortly after being sworn-in, the president, Comrade Etukipkong Bassey promised to continue to promote the interest of the alumni association, explaining that he was overwhelmed by the love, trust and solidarity the fellow alumni have shown to serve the collective interest of the association in all ramifications.

He appreciated provost and management of the College for their support and timely interventions in certain instances and promised continue to seek for their support and advice to lead the association well.
