Coalition to NASS: Conclude 2025 constitution review without further delay

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has urged the National Assembly to urgently conclude work on the 2025 Constitution Review process, warning that further delays threaten national stability, democratic trust and the credibility of upcoming elections.
In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, the groups expressed deep concern over the House of Representatives’ decision to suspend consideration of the Constitution Review Report, which contains 44 critical amendment proposals.
The statement was signed by WOMANIFESTO, WILAN, TOS Foundation, CISLAC, WARDC, GSAI, The Women International, I-Teach Africa and the National Secretariat for the Reserved Seats for Women Bill Campaign Coalition.
The coalition said Nigeria cannot afford uncertainty on reforms that directly affect security, governance and citizens’ daily lives.
The amendments, they noted, address issues such as safer communities, strengthened local government administration, credible elections, a more efficient judiciary and a more accountable state.
They stressed that Nigerians across all geopolitical zones have already played their part by making submissions, attending public hearings and participating in consultations, adding that it is now the responsibility of lawmakers to deliver on their mandate.
While acknowledging the need for legislative scrutiny, the CSOs warned that “delays are dangerous,” citing worsening insecurity, failing local governments, declining voter confidence and eroding democratic legitimacy.
They particularly highlighted the urgency of electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections. With INEC’s timetable already released and party primaries expected to conclude by July 2026, the groups said any further hesitation could lock the country into another flawed electoral cycle.
“These reforms are not just important, they are urgent, overdue and vital to national stability,” the coalition said.
The organisations called on the National Assembly to show leadership by concluding the constitution review before the end of 2025, stressing that “every delay weakens public trust.”
They also pledged to continue mobilising citizens, engaging lawmakers and holding institutions accountable until meaningful reforms are achieved.
