Canada 2015: Falcons yet to Commence Adequate Preparation

With less than 60 days to kick off of the 7th FIFA/Women World Cup in Canada, the Super Falcons are yet to begin meaningful preparation for the biggest and best women’s tournament despite the fact that Nigeria is drawn in ‘The group of death’ that included USA, Sweden and Australia.

A cross section of the sport writers in Lagos expressed sadness over the lackadaisical attitude shown towards Falcons’ preparation for the Women’s World Cup scheduled to begin in June in Canada.

Nigeria is drawn in Group D and these countries have intensified their preparations since January this year. USA had played over six friendlies and lined up other four before the tourney takes off in two months’ time.

In February USA defeated France 2-0, beat England 1-0, and stunned Norway 2-1 in an international competition.

Also in March USA also whitewashed Switzerland 3-0, drew 0-0 with Iceland and humiliated France 3-0 in a friendly.

Sweden on the other hand had played five top ranked friendlies between January and now. They beat Norway 3-2, spanked Finland 3-0, humbled Germany 4-2, lost to Brazil 0-2 and lost the final of that competition to Germany on March 15.

Australia too are not left out as they have been playing friendlies and participating in women tournaments across the globe.

Based on the opponents’ avalanche of results in preparation towards the world cup, concerned sport journalists based in Lagos voiced out their bitterness over Super Falcons lack of activities despite the fact that NFF gave Falcons a tall order to get to the semifinal of the women’s world cup.

Veteran sport journalist Tony Ubani revealed that it is very sad that up till this moment nothing is being done to prepare the Super Falcons for the world cup.

George Aluo another sport journalist frowned at the lip service the NFF is paying towards Falcons preparation. He urged the AmajuPinnik-led NFF to wake up from their apparent slumberand send the Falcons out of the country now to make good use of the remaining time for preparations.

Female soccer analyst OluchiTobechukwu said it is criminal not to prepare the Falcons well before sending them to play against Sweden, USA and Australia; three of the best teams in the world.

The Super Falcons will kick off their FIFA Women World Cup group matches with Sweden on June 8,Australia on June 12 and USA on June 16 at the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
