CAN youth wing president vows to restructure body in Abia

Newly elected Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Youth wing, Abia State chapter, Comrade Eugene Okonta (JP), has promised to make Abia CAN youth wing envy for other states to come and emulate from his good works.

Speaking to newsmen at St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church, Aba, shortly after his election, Comrade Okonta promised to ensure that Christian youths in the state remain vibrant.
He said: “I will make sure that Christian youths in Abia State will be vibrant and I, and my executive will work hard to ensure that things move very well in Abia State. We will strive to make sure that some of the needs of CAN Youth wing, like office accommodation, evangelism bus and other structures are realised. God being on my side, it is my dream that we achieve something for CAN Youth wing.

God knows why He wants me to be the leader of the Christian youths in the God’s own state. I see it that God has a plan for me. I am very happy that God has chosen me to do His work and I see it as a call to serve humanity and God. I am also asking God to give me the ability, inspiration and understanding to carry out this noble task to make sure that the Christian youths in Abia State will renew the face of Abia.

On how he planned engaging the youths in order to reduce ever increasing restiveness in the state, Okonta said: “I plan to meet with youth leaders in some of the Churches in the state, have audience with them, sit down and strategise with my executive to know the way forward. I believe if we go down on our knees in prayers, God will give us the inspiration of what we can do to curb youth restiveness in the state”.

Okonta called on politicians to assist make the CAN Youth wing vibrant by giving the body subventions, so that the body will carry out its legitimate functions and remain vibrant in the state. He also called on politicians to avoid using the youths to carry out dirty business like thuggery, snatching of ballot boxes during elections, kidnapping and other vices.

According to him, “Politicians should carry Christian youths along in their lawful activities knowing well that they have the mandate of the youths”, while advising Christian youths not to lose hope nor succumb to unlawful intimidation from politicians but remain focused and believe in God, adding, “He knows whatever happens and why it happened.

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria, South-East zone and its chairman in Abia as well as Umuahia Diocesan Catholic Bishop, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has congratulated Okonta on his election victory, praying God to use him to change the face of Christian Youths in Abia State.
