Bye-Election: Zamfara communities celebrate as opposition APC beats PDP, five polling units inconclusive

Communities in Zamfara are currently celebrating the defeat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the polls after it was declared loser during the 16th August state Assembly bye election.

At the end of the election, the ruling PDP got 5339 votes, while the opposition APC got 7001 votes, beating the ruling PDP by almost 2000 votes.

The INEC declared five polling units as inconclusive following crisis that led to the destruction of some electoral materials.

INEC stated that the affected polling units would face a re-run election on a day to be fixed.

Our correspondent who was at the scene gathered that the electorates were harassed by a team of political thugs led by a local government chief who made sure that the election in the affected five units were destroyed.

The chairman who was joined by others from Birnin Magaji Local Government were said to have stationed political thugs in the area with aim of destabilizing the process as they foresaw their defeat at the polls.

Alh. Sani Haruna, a resident of Banga, one of the areas where the bye-election was conducted, told our correspondent that on no account should the people of the area appreciate anything the governor of the state has a hand in, and their action was just the beginning.

“This is only a beginning, because we will continue to avoid anything that Dauda Lawan has a hand in.

This man we did all that is possible to make him what he is today, because he promised us good security, infact, what he said when he came here during the electioneering campaign of 23 March gubernatorial election was that two to three weeks after taking over the affairs of the state as governor, the issue of insecurity will be a thing of history.

That we will all go to our farms and we will sleep with our two eyes closed, but few months after he became governor, he abandoned us, every day we will witness one or two attacks by the bandits so how can we go for our enemy,” he asked.
