Burial ceremony: Man badly beaten over alleged gay brother
A funeral ceremony in Umuka Village, Osunmenyi, Nnewi South Local Government in Anambra State ended in a fracas on Friday as villagers swooped on one of their own over homosexuality allegations.
The incident, which happened at the burial ceremony of one Late Mrs. Lucy Ozoemena Adinnu, on Friday, August 23, 2019, forced mourners and sympathizers to take to their heels.
A source, who was at the event reported that the victim, Mr. Victor Chukwuma was beaten to stupor right in front of his mother, Mrs. Rose Chukwuma.
Accoring to the native, “what happened was that the villagers have been on the look-out for his elder brother, Mr. Collins Chukwuma, who they accused of being homosexual.
He added that during the burial, Victor, who had returned from Nnobi, a neighbouring community for the burial, drew the ire of the youths.
“They asked of the whereabouts of his elder brother, who they believe the family had helped to run away over two years ago and is hiding somewhere.
“Victor told them that he had no knowledge of his brother’s movement, but this fell on deaf ears. They pounced on him with all forms of objects; even his mother that attempted to rescue him got the beating of her life.”
Speaking on the attack, traumatized Victor told journalists that he was a victim of circumstance.
“I still can’t believe that my own people could unleash this kind of treatment on me. I don’t deserve it at all. If Collins had done anything, why can’t they wait until they find him.
“I survived this attack by a stroke of luck, because they really did not want me alive. But I leave them for their conscience and God. Even if I report to the authorities what would they do?” He said.
Meanwhile, his mother, Mrs. Rose Chukwuma refused to comment on the issue over fear of attack the by youths who some people referred to as cultists.
