Kaduna

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has discredited rumors of amending the Local Government Electoral Law ahead of the October 19 elections.

Chairman of the House Committee on Information, a PDP lawmaker representing Jaba Constituency, Henry Marah, confirmed that no amendment has been discussed since July, rejecting allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of a secret plan. Marah was joined at the Press Conference by members of the House Committee on Judiciary on Wednesday.

Marah urged the public and politicians to ignore these claims and continue with their campaigns, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to transparency and public interest.

On the issue of venue for SIECOM’s announcement of results, Marah explained the electoral body has the discretion, based on section 23 of electoral law, to decide a more secure location, including premises within its headquarters.

Marah went on to say that the law does not compel SIECOM to announce results at the polling units, whenever the officials understand that security breach is so ominous as to hinder them from declaring results seamlessly.

He added that the House has no business taking any legislative action that will truncate the October 19th elections or jeopardise the peace currently enjoyed in the State.
