Borno Police Step Up Security for Christmas After Deadly Mosque Bombing
The Borno State Police Command has intensified security measures across the state to ensure the safety of residents during the Christmas festivities.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, the police said its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit has been deployed to conduct routine sweeping and scanning of persons and vehicles at worship centres and recreational areas across the state.
“Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, CP Naziru Abdulmajid psc, to ensure proactive safety and security of public spaces and a hitch-free Christmas celebration, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit, Base 13 Maiduguri, conducted routine sweeping and scanning of persons and vehicles at worship centres and recreational areas across the state,” the statement said.
According to the police, the exercise is aimed at detecting and preventing potential security threats, particularly in locations expected to record high human traffic during the festive period.
The command urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious persons, movements or objects to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines.
The heightened security comes in the aftermath of a suicide bombing at a local mosque on December 24, which claimed at least five lives and raised fears of further attacks.
In response to the incident, the police said more than 1,000 officers have been mobilised across the state to provide round-the-clock protection for residents and visitors during the Christmas celebrations.
