Borno flood: UMTH urges Donors’ support to re-fix Cancer Centre

Four months after the September 10th devastating flood in Borno state, Chief Medical Director of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Professor Ahmed Ahidjo has appealed for intervention from philanthropists as well as Donor organizations to help restore its Cancer Centre.

Prof Ahidjo who made the appeal in an interview with newsmen weekend, regretted that the September 10th, 2024 Maiduguri devastating flood, greatly affected equipments at the Cancer Centre.

According to him, the hospital requires intervention to enable it bounce back to normal to meet the growing demands of patients.

Professor Ahidjo said the 1,305 bed capacity university of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Borno state is in need of intervention from both the government and donors, because the flood rendered many equipments inactive.

The CMD explained that the flood affected clinical service provision to patients, as most of the sophisticated equipments in the hospital were damaged beyond repairs.

He said preliminary assessment indicated that Radio Diagnostic equipments damaged during the flood include CT scan, MRI, C-Arm X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, among others.

According to the CMD, Laboratory equipments such as the PCR machines, second, third and fourth level diagnostic equipments were also damaged.

Prof Ahidjo who stressed that the most damaged and disturbing is the cancer center that is affected, regretted that the entire equipments in the cancer center including the two Linax (HD vaser) which is the only one in the west African subregion as of today was severely damaged.

He further disclosed that the CT planning machine and the set up wiring system were all affected, pleading with well-wishers, private donors to help towards re-equipping of the hospital, which he reasoned should not be left for the government alone.

“It should be a collective responsibility because it is our collective institution where we train people and provide services for our people. So, it’s our own property, we should ensure that we restore it back to normalcy. So I plead with all concerned to come and work with us to collectively restore the hospital back to normal services”, the CMD further appealed.

Prof Ahidjo who disclosed that the rehabilitation center of the hospital has been fully restored by the International Red cross which funded its renovation, commended the federal government for doing so much for the hospital.

He further appealed for more support in order to ensure that the hospital is given a facelift to ensure normalcy in service provision.
