Borno Assembly restates commitment to security, welfare of corps members

Borno House of Assembly has reiterated its commitment towards security and improved welfare for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in the state.

The Speaker, Mr Abdulkarim Lawal, stated this when the State NYSC Coordinator, Mr Nura Umar, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Maiduguri.

Lawal, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Abdullahi Musa, described the visit as the first of its kind in the legislative history of the state.

He said the House would continue to provide sound legislation to ensure protection and promotion of well-being of corps members as well as enhance operations of the scheme in the state.

Lawal added that the legislators were ready to support Community Development Service (CDS) programme of the scheme in the areas of fight against drug abuse, sanitation, agriculture and education among others.

The speaker urged the corps members to initiate sensitisation campaign on out-of-school children in the state, adding that the lawmakers were ready to provide support to facilitate successful execution of the programme.

He noted that such programme was critical to creating awareness on government’s policies and programmes for sustainable social and economic development.

“I am highly impressed by the visit of the NYSC Coordinator to the House, to acquaint himself and corps members in view of the importance of legislators in the operations of the scheme.

“I think the gesture is worthy of commendation.

“Whatever they think we can do as legislators or on personal basis, you should come to us we are ready to make the service year fruitful and successful,” he said.

Umar said the visit was to enhance synergy with the legislature to improve corps members’ welfare and enhance their engagement in promoting social and economic development.

He said the scheme had enjoyed mutual working relation with the State Government and people of the state, adding that some of the corps members had indicated interest to stay at the end of their service year in the state.

“It is a very effective visit; we are here to appreciate the existing cordial relationship between the NYSC State Secretariat and Borno House of Assembly as well as solicit for more support.

“We sincerely appreciate and comfortable, there is strong commitment for more active support to the scheme.

“There is also a commitment on the sponsoring of corps projects, their security and welfare by the House,” he said.
