…Says blood donor is life saver
A member of staff of The Daily Times newspaper, Mr. Nathaniel John, who has voluntarily donated blood for 15 years, has said that regular blood donation helps save millions of lives every year, lowers calories and improves body fitness.

The young looking 40-year-old John, who is the highest blood donor in Nigeria, also attributed the secret of his youthful looks to donation of blood.

Speaking during an exclusive interview, John said that aside living a healthy lifestyle, blood donation enhances the production of new blood cells, adding

According to him, he feels satisfied donating blood.

John said, “Each time I donate blood, I feel satisfied knowing that the impact is not only on the patient who receives the blood and whose life may depend on the blood transfusion but also all those who may depend on the patient.”

He said that blood donation can help patients suffering from life-threatening health conditions to live longer with higher quality of life.

He said, “Transfusion of blood helps in saving millions of lives every year and puts a natural smile on the face of blood receiver.

“When blood is withdrawn, the donor’s body immediately begins to replenish the lost blood within 24 hours of donation.

Commenting on the positive side of donation blood, John said, “Each time I donate blood, my body immediately begins to replenish the lost blood.

I acquire new cells produced by the bone marrow within 48 hours of blood donation and all of the red blood cells that was lost during the donation are completely replaced within one to two months.

All of the red blood cells the donor loses during donation are completely replaced within one month to two months.

“Therefore, donating blood helps to stimulate the production of new red blood cells in me. This process of replenishment helps my body to stay healthy and work more efficiently”.

When asked about the side effect of donating blood, John replied that there was none.

He said, “For the 55 times, constantly for 13 years I have voluntarily donated blood, I never experienced any side effect, instead I always enjoyed my blood donations.”

He further called on voluntary regular non remunerated blood donors that are yet to do so to take up the challenge of voluntarily donating blood.

He added that the best way to ensure adequate safe blood supply for an effective health system was through regular donations by voluntary and unpaid blood donors.
