Those behind siege on National Assembly must be prosecuted, says Turaki
A frontline presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has called for the prosecution of those behind the siege on the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Speaking separately in Ibadan and Osogbo while visiting Oyo and Osun states to consult with PDP delegates, state executive committees and other leaders of the party, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said that it was not enough for the Federal Government to sack any culprit from his job.
“Those responsible should be investigated and prosecuted in the court to serve as deterrence from such acts in the future,” he said.
Turaki expressed sadness at the desecration of the symbol of democracy, the National Assembly with impunity 19 years after sustained efforts were made to establish representative governance.
He noted that putting the National Assembly under siege was tantamount to putting Nigeria’s democracy in chains.
It also meant that the rule of law had no meaning to the ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC), he lamented.
The aspirant promised to rejig the economy from the comatose level that the APC had placed it if given the opportunity to serve, and also create an enabling environment for the youth to be engaged productively so that they themselves can be employers of labour.
Turaki in a release signed by Sola Atere, Director Media and Publicity, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki Presidential Campaign Organisation, further promised that the security agencies will be headed by seasoned professionals who will complement one another in tackling the nation’s security challenges more effectively and efficiently.
He enjoined members of the party to be united and brace for the challenges ahead in trying to wrestle power from those he termed as marauders at the next general elections, stressing that he has what it takes to defeat the APC presidential candidate.
While in Oyo State, a former Minister of Sports, Professor Taoheed Adedoja said that Turaki’s integrity, capacity, education, knowledge and leadership qualities besides being a bridge builder stood him out among other contestants.
He said: “Having been born in the North (Kano), I know all the aspirants from the north and they know me. I know their antecedents also.”
Professor Adedoja said that the South West PDP members have a choice to either collect money and sell their conscience at the national convention of the party, or support a well-exposed person who they can be proud of and thereby, doing the right thing for the country.
In Osun State, the state chairman, Hon. Soji Adagunodo said Turaki had won their heart with his eloquence and deep understanding of the problems confronting the nation and the solution prescribed by him, as well as his youthfulness and dynamism.
