Bauchi warns farmers against fake, substandard farming inputs

As the farming season approaches, the Bauchi state Ministry of Agriculture has warned farmers in the 20 local government areas of the state against purchasing fake and substandard farming products, and implements that will hinder the growth of their crops.

General Manager of the state owned Agricultural Company (BASAC), Alhaji Ibrahim Isah, stated this on Thursday while speaking to newsmen in Bauchi.

According to the general manager, such substandard products will not only harm the crops planted by farmers, but can also affect their farm produce.

He said Governor Bala Mohammed has in his desire to make the state’s economy agriculture driven, has taking appropriate measures to ensure food security in the state by providing the needed support to the ministry to assist farmers need in the state.

“The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Sama’ila Burga has procured chemicals, organic fertilizers, herbicides and varieties of seeds which are stored in BASAC and in the 20 local government areas of the state,” he said.

The general manager said they have provided the farming materials close to farmers at the grassroots so that they can access them without any difficulty at subsidized rates.

“Presently, there are 15,000 kilograms of different seeds like maize, we have three varieties of beans, rice soya beans, sorghum, millet and all that is needed by farmers as part of efforts to get bumper harvest in the state,” Alhaji Isah said.

The general manager while advising farmers to visit the nearest office of BASAC and contact agricultural experts for advice, said the needed farming inputs can be acquired at a subsidized rates.
