Bauchi lawmaker demands re-opening of mosques, churches

A Bauchi state House of Assembly member representing Giade Local Government Area, Dan’umma Bello has called on the state government to re-open worship centers in the state to enable worshipers observe juma’at prayers and Sunday services.

Dan’umma made the call at plenary presided over by the speaker of the assembly, Abubakar Sulaiman.

This was contained in a press statement obtained from the spokesman of the speaker, Mal. Abdul yesterday in Bauchi.

The lawmaker asserted that “since people are allowed to go to market for three days per week, people should equally be allowed to go and pray Juma’at prayers on Fridays, and church servicew on Sunday.”

He said that there is need to go spiritual to end COVID-19 and the best way to do that is to allow people to observe Juma’ah prayers and church services.

Dan’umma also opined that the state government should reduce the number of mosques and churches by selecting few that can be opened.

A lawmaker, Jamilu Dahiru, representing Bauchi Central Constituency requested that the House observe a minute of special prayer for Bauchi state and the country for God to heal all infected persons, and end the pandemic.

Speaking earlier, a member representing Azare/Madangala, Tijjani Aliyu had under matters of urgent public importance, moved a motion on the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

He recalled that so many measures have been taken by the state government including partial lockdown, social distancing and suspension of plenary of the state assembly to end the pandemic.

Tijjani explained that Bauchi as one of poverty ravaged states and with Bauchi North having the highest index of poverty in the state, coupled with the negative consequences of the disease, people of the state will suffer a lot.

He therefore, suggested that the House must work hand in hand with the executive arm to protect the citizens.

Speaker Abubakar Suleiman said the motion is very important going by how the disease is rapidly spreading and the number of people dying.

He therefore, said as representatives of the people, the assembly is very much concerned with the situation and sympathized with all those infected, and prayed for Allah’s protection

Contributing, Deputy Speaker of the assembly, Danlami Kawule said people of Bauchi state are awareness about the disease as most of the cases recorded are returnees from other parts of the country.

He urged his colleagues to protect their constituents by making sure their borders with other etates are patrolled and protected.
