Bauchi Emir assures FRSC over speed limit device
The Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu has assured the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) of his readiness to ensure Commercial drivers in the state install Speed Limit Device in vehicles.
The Emir gave this assurance in his palace when the FRSC Zone 12, Commander, Assistant Corps Marshal Peter Kibo paid him a courtesy visit.
He also commended the FRSC established in 1988, for reducing road accidents through various sensitization programs in the state and across the Country.
“Such programs have helped greatly and the device would do more, and I will also consult with the leadership of Road Transport Workers’ Union on the usefulness of the device, for it is a good development”. The Emir noted.
Earlier, the FRSC Zone 12 boss, Assistant Corps Marshal Peter Kibo, who resumed duty in the zone last week, told the Emir, that he was in the Palace to receive his fatherly and Royal  blessings before embarking on his official duty in Zone 12″.
The FRSC Zone 12 is made up of Bauchi, Borno and Yobe states with headquarters in Bauchi state.
Kibo, also solicited the Emir’s cooperation in ensuring the success of the newly introduced Speed Limit Device, so as to reduce road carnage and other FRSC programs said, appealed to the Emir to keep his doors open as he will again come to him for advice and help”.
while interacting with journalists in his Bauchi office, Kibo, charged drivers in the zone to comply as defaulters will not go free.
“As from February 1st, we will begin full implementation of the installation of speed limiting devices in all commercial vehicles, and any commercial vehicle without the device will be arrested”.
“We will begin the strict enforcement of this policy on Wednesday February ,20017, and any commercial vehicle without this device, will be impounded because non-installation and use of the device will amount to a breach of Traffic Law”, he explained.
“And when we impound such vehicle, we will not release it until the device is installed.
The installation of the device is aimed to reduce road accidents by over speeding especially by commercial drivers.
“We have discovered that the major cause of accidents on our roads is over speeding. It is as a result of this that the speed limiting device was introduced to reduce speed in vehicles.
He noted that if successfully achieved, the measure will save many lives because accidents would be reduced drastically.
The Zonal Commanding Officer said that the FRSC has been holding consultations with major stakeholders like National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), the National Union of Road Transport Owners (NURTW), among others, to intimate them on the importance of the policy.
He said despite claims by some commercial drivers that the device is very expensive, installing the device is worth it.
According to him, “all through our campaigns, we have never claimed to the people responsible for this device neither have we been a party to the sale of this device.
“All we want to emphasize is that there is no cost too much to the cost of one life. Calling on commercial drivers to comply even as he advised passengers to ensure that any vehicle they will board for any journey has the speed limiting device.
“They can know whether or not a vehicle has this device by sending a text with the message: VERIFY Plate Number, which they should send to 33180 irrespective of the mobile network or phone they have,” he stated.
