In an effort to address the shortcomings in Nigeria’s basic education sector, the Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN), will tomorrow, November 9, 2017, hold its second national education summit with the theme, ‘Whither Basic Education?

The summit which comes up at 10am and holds at WAEC International Centre at Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, will have the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Hammid Bobboyi, as the keynote speaker while Nigeria’s former Representative to UNESCO, Emeritus Professor, Michael Omolewa, will chairman the occasion.

The Chairman and Secretary of the Local Organising Committee of the programme, Mr. Kayode Olanrewaju and Mrs. Kikelomo Oduyebo respectively said in a press release, that the summit will also feature presentations from the NUT President, Comrade Michael Alogba,

Registrar of National Examination Council, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, and former Commissioner for Education in Edo State, Professor Ngozi Osareren, among other key stakeholders in the education subsector.

They said the belief of EWAN as agenda setters is that recommendations from this year’s summit will help accelerate the development of basic education in Nigeria so that government, regulators, operators, parents, students, civil society groups can continue to collaborate for improved standards in this critical sector of the education which is often neglected.

They noted that the first edition of the summit with former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, as a keynote speaker and held in 2016 was with a focus on: “The Integrity of Public Examinations and Admission in Nigeria”.

The outcome of the summit, they pointed out, resulted in the reinstatement of the Post-UTME screening.
