At last, Gov Abbas Resigns From NNPP, Says Unresolved Internal Crisis, cause Of Action

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf has formally tendered his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing unresolved internal crisis and persistent rivalries in the party.
The resignation was announced on Friday, through the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, with effect from January 25, 2026, following a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for providing him a political platform and the support he received from its leadership and members since 2022.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly, irreconcilable and have generated uncertainty at both State and National levels.
“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey, as well as the support, goodwill, and cooperation extended to me during my time in the party,” he said.
However, Yusuf explained that ongoing leadership disagreements and prolonged legal battles at both State and National levels had created deep divisions and weakened party cohesion, stressing that his decision followed careful reflection and guided by the best interest of the people of Kano State, assuring that it was taken in good faith and without bitterness.
“The resignation was accompanied by 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight federal House of Representatives members, and 44 Local Government Chairmen across the State, signaling a major shift in the party’s structure.”
Responding to the resignation, NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged the internal crisis, commending Yusuf’s contributions saying; “Though we are trying our best to contain it, we have no option than to accept the resignation of one of the most performing Governors of the NNPP.”
Though the resignation letter did not specify which party the Governor and his supporters are joining but the body language of Governor Abbas indicates the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, APC.
