ASUU strike: AAU, UNIBEN lecturers join action, cripples academic activities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Alli University and the University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapters yesterday unanimously resolved to fully comply with the resolution of the NEC of ASUU to resume a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike nationwide.

ASUU Chairman, University of Benin Chapter, Prof Julius Iyasele who confirmed the action to newsmen said that government’s insensitivity to the plight of Nigerians and public tertiary institutions in the country prompted the strike.

Chairman AAU, Ekpoma, Dr. Monday Igbafen disclosed that academic activities have been paralysed in AAU Ekpoma following the withdrawal of Academic staff from attending lectures.

In a statement issued by the Zonal coordinator ASUU, Benin Zone, Prof. Fred Esumeh said branches in the zone that embarked on the strike include, Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa and the University of Benin, Benin City.

“Our union calls on well meaning Nigerians to prevail on government to save public universities and ensure the future of our children”.

Igbafen accused government of deliberate systematic destruction of Education sector and particular reference to public universities in the country through adoption and implementation of neo- Libra policies.

“Government must not be allowed to continue on this part of annihilation of public universities in the country through the promotion of a regime of commercialization of Education, inadequate funding, fragrant disregard for agreement and promotion of impunity.” Igbafen said.
