Association laments rot in education system

Low quality of knowledge has been attributed to the decay been witnessed in the education sector in Nigeria.

This statement was made in Bauchi by the National President of Government Science School Toro Old Boys Association Class of 88 in Bauchi State, Mr Tanimu Umar while speaking at the 30 years of reunion meeting with the theme: “30 years after Toro ; the journey so far”, at the weekend.

Tanimu who said the decay in the education system is disturbing, added that,”30 years back we attended school with all the infrastructure in place, available books, functional libraries and laboratories in the school.

“Look at the situation now, very pathetic, poor learning materials, no qualified teachers and many more facilities that are not available for students learning.

He warned that, “if necessary steps are not taken to address poor funding, infra structural decay, insecurity, especially as a result of insurgency, and poor performance the system will continue to get decayed”.

Tanimu while calling on Toro Science old boys to give back to the school said “we benefited much from the school which took us to where we are now, so we have to give back to the school”.

In a paper presented at the meeting, a University Don and Consultant Pathologist ABU/ ATBUTH Zaria Dr Usman Aliyu identified lack of harmony, tribal and religious crisis, vandalism, rustling, poor pay and welfare for teachers as the reasons for low quality of education.

“Poor funding of education sector affects feeding, hostels toilets facilities and incessant crisis and strike are some of the factors.

He said government cannot do it alone the old boys need to come in with sacrifice to provide for the young children in the schools.

“We have to redefine a source of resources for the school to enhance its learning ability, make the younger generation feel the way we feel in those days. Dr Aliyu said.

He said there must be active and deliberate commitment by governments to actively invest in all levels of education to promote availability, affordability and accessibility of quality education.

In his remark the Chairman of the meeting Alhaji Mohammed Madugu who is also an old boy called on the members to partner the school authorities and contribute in the areas of learning materials and infrastructural development of the school.

“We have to start a fund to help the orphans and widow left by our friends and classmate who are deceased, scholarship up keep allowances to ease their difficulties, he said.

The Chairman of the meeting pledged to establish ICT center in Toro Science School Bauchi state with Internet, and learning soft wears.
