Army/Shi’ites clash: Group urges FG, to implement NHRC report

A human rights organisation, the Nigerian Youths Collective Against Violence and Terrorism, NYCAVT, has threatened to establish an indefinite camp within the premises of the United Nations should the Federal Government and Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai of Kaduna State refuse to implement the report of the National Human Rights Commission.
The threat by the NYCAVT came few days after another group of protesters, under the aegis of Sovereign Rights Coalition, called on the Federal Government to severe diplomatic relationship with the Republic of Iran over alleged sponsoring of El-Zak Zakky.
The spokesperson of NYCAVAT, Smart Aigbomian, who issued the threat when he led about 200 protesters to the Nigerian Office of the United Nations, said even without being propelled to act on the two reports, the government should have done the needful by prosecuting everyone who precipitated the mayhem.
The NYCAVT, which also called on government to probe the finances and source of funding for the Islamic Movement of Nigeris (IMN), advised the UN to caution the Iranian government over its complicity in the atrocities of the Islamic sect.
The group said, “The Federal Government should treat our protest today (Friday) as a warning and a call on it to immediately arraign El-Zak Zakky and indeed, any other member of his sect indicted in any of the reports on the events of December 2015.
“Where the government fails to show commitment to prosecute El-Zak Zakky and IMN fanatics within reasonable time, we shall be constrained to hold more protests and scale up our presence in other cities, particularly to those place that currently hosts IMN protests calling for the release of the man we want to stand trial.
“We shall also be compelled to stage an indefinite camp at the premises of the UN if it fails to prevail on the Nigerian government to put El-Zak Zakky on trial as prescribed by several reports which have indicted him for breeding extremism and radicalising youths to the detriment of our dear nation”, the NYCAVAT emphasised.
The NHRC had recommended the trial of the IMN leader, Ibraheem El-Zak Zakky and his followers sequel to the attack on Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai by members of his sect.
Aigbomian said even without being propelled to act on the two reports, the government should have done the needful by prosecuting everyone who precipitated the mayhem.
He said, “Failure to prosecute these people, including El-Zak Zakky, is making these people think of coming out because it is now believed that it now fashionable to take on the state without consequences.
“The UN, through its offices here in Nigeria, must prevail on the government to do the needful. Enough of the foot dragging that is making the indicted play the victim.
“The UN must also prevail on Nigeria to bring charges of subversion against members of the group for inviting Iranian intervention in the internal affairs of Nigeria.
“As a prelude to this, the government should investigate the finances of the group and its senior members to see if they have been beneficiary of Iranian sponsorship of terrorism or not.
“We appeal to the UN and all its member countries not to repeat the mistake of silence that nurtured the growth of Boko Haram terror. The world can it watch in silence as the IMN grows into a terror group; the world must not watch in silence”, the group said.
