Armed Forces Day: Wike advocates comprehensive package for serving, retired servicemen
Barrister Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has suggested a more comprehensive reward package for servicemen and legionnaires to encourage them to always make sacrifices for the country.
The governor who was speaking during an Inter-Denominational Church Service to mark the 2017 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day Celebration at the First Baptist Church, Aggrey Road in Port Harcourt, said that the present day annual ritual for servicemen and legionnaires
“It is important that the Federal Government takes a second look to keep families of servicemen and ex-servicemen going. I urge that steps be taken to make sure that the families left behind by the ex-servicemen are not allowed to suffer,” he said, and lauded security personnel for their efforts are promoting peace across the country.
Speaking in a sermon earlier, President of First Baptist Church, Rivers State Conference, Rev. Benjamin Avor, called on Nigerians to live their lives in ways that would promote peace. In a message entitled: “Raising Stones of Remembrance in Honour of Our Heroes,” Rev. Avor advised that bridges of peace should be built to honour those who fought for the country.
The inter-denominational service was attended by Service Commanders, Ex-servicemen, Commissioners, lawmakers, and Judges of the High Court where prayers were said for the fallen heroes and their surviving families, Nigerian Legion, and Servicemen.
