Appointment of envoys is long overdue—ADP

The Action Democratic Party, ADP, has acknowledged the recent nomination of Envoys by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying its an action though long overdue, warning that the country has already paid the price.
It also said the President finally begins to correct a damaging vacuum in Nigeria’s diplomatic machinery, however, commended president Tinubu for acting at last.
In his reactions to the release of names of Ambassadorial nominees for Senate
confirmation, the National Chairman of party, Engr Yabagi Sani on Monday in Abuja, stated that this delay has already weakened Nigeria where it matters most: security, diplomacy, and national credibility, stressing that, “for more than two years, Nigeria has operated without substantive leadership in all our foreign missions.”
He said: “This vacuum undermines our security intelligence cooperation, slowed vital diplomatic engagements, constrained economic outreach, and left millions of Nigerians abroad, without adequate representation, at a time when insecurity is escalating at home, such avoidable lapses are simply too costly.”
The ADP asserts that no Government committed to efficiency and national interest should leave critical positions vacant for this long. Diplomatic missions are extensions of Nigeria’s sovereignty and reputation.
“Delays in staffing them are not administrative oversights, but, failures with real consequences for national welfare and affects the nation’s global standing among the committee of nations.
“While we welcome the President’s decision to move forward, this episode reinforces urgent need for a statutory, time-bound framework that compels the executive to complete essential appointments within a reasonable period.
“Governance cannot depend on discretion or convenience; it must be guided by structures, precedents and time-tested traditions and practices that prevent the repetition of costly delays.”
Engr. Yabagi Sani who is also the Jakadan Nupe, further noted that some geo-political regions are underrepresented going by the number of appointees due to lop-sidedness, saying; “I hope this will be corrected with subsequent appointments. National priority should determine the selection and posting of Envoys to duty posts rather than primordial interests.”
The ADP therefore, calls on the National Assembly to act decisively by enacting clear timelines for all appointments, central to Nigeria’s security architecture, diplomatic engagement, and institutional effectiveness.
“Nigeria can no longer afford a governance model where crucial state functions go unattended while national challenges escalate.
“The party stands firmly on the side of responsible leadership, timely decision-making, and strengthening of institutions that protect the welfare and safety of every Nigerian,” he added.
