APGA’s Emmanuel Nwachukwu wins Anambra South Senatorial by-election

Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), emerged winner of the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result on Sunday at its office in Nnewi Local Government, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Declaring the outcome, the Returning Officer, Frank Ojiako, said Nwachukwu polled 90,408 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Azuka Okwuosa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who secured 19,847 votes.

Donald Amangbo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) came third with 2,889 votes.

Ojiako said, “I hereby make the declaration that Emmanuel Nwachukwu of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”

He commended the candidates for their peaceful conduct and praised voters for turning out in large numbers during the exercise.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South in the Senate until July 2024. Twelve political parties contested the poll held on August 16.
