APC’s Anabraba escapes arrest by plain clothes security agents
The Rivers state House of Assembly Minority Leader, Hon. Benibo Frederick Anabraba, who has been locked in a running battle with his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, over his controversial election in the House, on Wednesday narrowly escaped being arrested by some men in plain clothes suspected to be security agents.
Information reaching the press revealed that some plain clothes security operatives visited arrived at his office at the Assembly Complex, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, in the afternoon allegedly to arrest but missed him by the whiskers as he had already stepped out to an unspecified destination. Hon. Anabraba, representing Akuku Toru Constituency 11, confirmed the incident, pointing an accusing finger at APC as the masterminds of the attempted arrest.
The Minority Leader stated that he strongly suspected his APC colleagues in the House following alleged threats from them that he would be answerable for ‘aligning’ with the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the House. “Some of my colleagues from APC in the house have hinted me that a serious action would be taken against me for ‘working against’ the interest of the party.” Hon. Anabraba said he would not let the issue be swept under the carpet as he was set to brief his legal representatives on the matter for necessary action.
More than two weeks ago, Hon. Anabraba was expelled by the APC for alleged anti-party activities, disobedience, and negligence in carrying out the lawful directives of the party. Hon. Anabrabra was elected the Minority Leader in the Assembly in an electoral process in which the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, nominated and ensured his election to the disapproval of the APC members who claimed that it was their right to decide who became the Minority Leader.
In a letter dated January 27, 2017, addressed to Hon. Anabraba and copied to the National Chairman and the National Vice Chairman, South-South of the party, the APC state Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, claimed that the party’s National Working Committee, NWC had invited the lawmaker on three occasions based on all the allegations leveled against him but that he ignored the invitations. He had since denied all the allegations leveled against him by the APC and threatened to drag the party to court to prove his innocence.
