APC Governors Unbothered by Fubara Impeachment Moves, Says Sule

The Progressive Governors Forum(PGF), the umbrella body of governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has declared that it is not losing sleep over the renewed impeachment proceedings initiated against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Abdullahi Sule, the Governor of Nasarawa State, stated that the forum remains unperturbed because the impeachment process is a matter of law that must follow strict due process.

When asked if the APC governors were anxious about the plot to remove Fubara, who has been embroiled in a long-running political battle with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, Sule insisted that the rule of law would ultimately prevail.

“I’m not worried because I think it’s an issue of the court. I am not worried about anybody impeaching anyone,” Sule said. “You don’t just wake up and impeach somebody without going through the due process.”

While acknowledging the fraternity among state executives, Sule clarified the limits of their concern. “Of course, whatever happens to any of our colleagues, we are worried, but we are not so worried to the point of saying he is going to be impeached.”

He pointed to the involvement of the judiciary as a stabilizing factor, noting that “courts are taking decisions” and “the chief judge is taking a position,” which gives the governors confidence that the law will take its course.

Governor Sule also addressed the internal crisis rocking the APC chapter in Rivers State, describing it as a “party affair” rather than a matter for the PGF to intervene in directly.

He revealed that the APC National Working Committee (NWC) has been tasked with studying the situation.

“We have asked the party to go and study the situation [in Rivers] and brief us if they need anything from the Progressive Governors’ Forum,” he explained.

The latest impeachment attempt, led by the Martin Amaewhule-led faction of the Rivers House of Assembly, began on January 8.

The lawmakers accused Fubara of gross misconduct, including the unauthorized spending of public funds and the withholding of legislative allocations.

However, the move has faced significant legal hurdles. On January 23, a Rivers High Court adjourned the case indefinitely, ruling that the Court of Appeal must first address pending appeals filed by the factional Speaker and other lawmakers.

Additionally, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon Amadi, has refused to set up an investigative panel, citing existing court orders.

This marks the third impeachment attempt against Governor Fubara in less than three years, a saga widely viewed as a proxy war between the Governor and the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
