Another Blow to PDP as Nasarawa Senator, Mohammed Onawo, Resigns Membership
The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) has suffered another significant setback in the North-Central region as the Senator representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District, Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, has officially resigned his membership from the party.
The federal lawmaker announced his decision in a formal letter dated January 10, 2026, which was addressed to the Chairman of the PDP in Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
In the correspondence, Senator Onawo stated that his resignation takes immediate effect, citing “personal reasons” for his departure after years of service on the opposition platform.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area, with effect from today, 10th January, 2026,” the statement read.
Senator Onawo, a prominent political figure in Nasarawa State who previously served in the House of Representatives and was the running mate to the PDP governorship candidate in 2019, expressed his gratitude to the party’s leadership and supporters.
He acknowledged the platform the PDP provided him to serve his constituents in various capacities over the years.
“I remain deeply grateful for the trust, cooperation, and support I received throughout my time in the party. Please accept my appreciation and best wishes for the continued progress and success of the party,” he added.
While the Senator remained tight-lipped about his next political destination in the resignation letter, political observers have linked him to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speculation regarding a potential switch to the ADC has been rife since July 2025, when he was reportedly sighted at a meeting of the party, which has recently become a gathering point for opposition figures following the defection of Peter Obi.
This resignation further depletes the ranks of the PDP in the National Assembly and raises questions about the party’s ability to retain its stronghold in Nasarawa South ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The state chapter of the PDP has yet to issue an official reaction to the exit of one of its most senior stakeholders.
