Governments at all levels in the country have been challenged to rise up to their responsibility of protecting their citizens from risks and disasters.
The Vice-Chairman of Anambra State chapter of Red Cross Society, Prof. Emeka Katchy, stated this in an address he presented during the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
In the address titled “Home Safe Home; Reducing Exposure, Reducing”, Prof. Katchy said local communities and civil societies, most threatened by hazards should also emerge “as initiators of important risk and disaster prevention actions, challenging them to work in partnerships with others relevant stakeholders.
Prof. Katchy said that regional, sub-regional and inter-national collaboration was essential, especially in the area of dissemination of experience, information, scientific and technical applications, continual advocacy and the co-ordination of strategies to assist in the development of national capabilities.
He said United Nations specifically should address global risk issues, ensure coherence among humanitarian aid, disaster prevention and development as well as promote collaboration among countries.
“Risk and disaster reduction should be closely monitored by the risk and disaster reduction community, and global review of progress and accomplishments should be undertaken by all concerned parties within a period of five years,” said Prof. Katchy.
He called on the concerned bodies in disaster emergency management in Nigeria to wake up so as to key into the international best practices of disaster risk management reduction by ensuring home safety to reduce exposure and displacement.
