Anambra poll: Abubakar peace c’ttee signs accord with 18 parties tomorrow

Three days ahead of the Anambra State governorship election, the National Peace Committee, NPC, headed by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, is expected to supervise the signing of a peace accord in Awka, the state capital, tomorrow, with representatives of the 18 political parties participating.

All the candidates of the eighteen political parties, who are contesting in the November 6 governorship election, will be made to commit themselves to the peace process in writing, ahead of the election.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) is expected to supervise the peace process in Awka, the state capital.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has arrived Awka ahead of tomorrow’s stakeholders’ meeting between INEC and all concerned parties.

A statement on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, confirmed that he (Yakubu) will on Thursday attend the Peace Accord ceremony, where all the contesting candidates of the 18 Political Parties will commit themselves to peace in writing.

According to the statement, “Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and his entourage comprising National Commissioners, members of the Technical Team, Directors and other Directing Staff, have just arrived at Enugu Airport en route Akwa. Bishop Hassan Kukah, one of the conveners of the National Peace Committee was on the same flight.

“Prof Yakubu is billed to attend the traditional and final Stakeholders’ Meeting tomorrow in Awka, to discuss final aspects of the Anambra State Governorship Election, scheduled for Saturday 6th November 2021.

“He will also on Thursday attend the Peace Accord ceremony, where all the contesting candidates of the 18 Political Parties will commit themselves to peace in writing”, the statement concluded.
