Anambra Assembly tasks govts on welfare of journalists

The Anambra House of Assembly has charged the Federal and State governments to improve the welfare of Journalists through an enhanced special salary structure.

Speaking at the plenary session on Tuesday, the Speaker, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu, who made the call said she felicitated with the Nigerian Journalists, as they join their counterparts all over the world to celebrate this year’s World press Freedom Day.

According to her, the role of Journalists in nation building deserved an increase salary as a kind of motivation.

The Speaker, however, charged governments at all levels to make information free and available to journalists at all times without hindrances in line with the principles of press freedom.

Maduagwu challenged Journalists to always uphold the ethics of the profession in the course of discharging the duties and shun acts capable of retarding the image of the profession.

Meanwhile, the House has called on Governor Willie Obiano to direct the Commissioner for Environment, Beautification and Ecology to ensure urgent and continuous cleaning of all drainage across the state during the raining season.

The sponsor of the motion, Mr. Lawrence Ezendu, representing Dunukofia Constituency, observed that all forms of waste impeded the free flow of water during rainfall, resolving to environmental hazards such as flooding and erosion.
