Some supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Tuesday during a rally in honour of the wife of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Mrs Jonathan was represented at the event by the wife of Vice President Namadi Sambo, Hajiya Aminat Sambo.
The clash left several people injured and personal property worth millions of Naira destroyed. It occurred when the convoy of the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, drove through the Presidential boulevard where the PDP was playing host to Hajiya Sambo.
It was gathered that as the convoy was passing, some miscreants began pelting one another with stones, sachet water and other dangerous weapons. The situation worsened as the miscreants began to smash the windscreens of some vehicles while many people also suffered varying degrees of injuries.
In the speech read on her behalf, the First Lady urged the people of Ogun to vote for continuity, sustainability and transformation in the coming general election.
The First Lady’s address was read at a women rally in support of President Jonathan’s re-election bid, held at the PDP’s secretariat in the town.
She advised the people not to vote for any politician who would not support women in his government and urged women to vote massively for President Jonathan and all PDP candidates in the elections.
“This administration has been gender-friendly; the president has met the 35 percent affirmative action for the appointment of women into political positions in the country and I believe it can still be moved to 50 percent,” she said.
Mrs. Jonathan continued: “We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of the nation.
“I am very sure you are aware of the transformation that has been going on in the transportation system, the railways are now working. Our schools are now with new infrastructures. Our health sector has improved; the President has done a lot to tackle the developmental needs of the nation.
“The women should come out en-masse to re-elect the President for a second tenure. PDP is coming back to Ogun State.”
Mrs Jonathan thanked the Ogun State people for the love showed to the president, saying that they did not come to campaign but to celebrate the women.
Earlier in his address, former Governor of the State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, promised the people whose houses were de-molished by the Amosun administration that the incoming governor from the PDP, Mr Gboyega Isiaka would build another one for them in other locations.
He recalled that his administration embarked on low cost housing scheme which the civil servants benefited from, saying that the present administration had neglected the civil servants.
Daniel said the PDP still remained the party to beat in Nigeria, adding that the people should come out en-masse to vote President Jonathan in the elections.
Also speaking, Isiaka said that Jonathan’s administration recognised women and the youths in his government
“This country has moved forward and we need a president that will continue with the infrastructural development of the country, we should not go backward.
“Ogun State is ready to deliver the state to President Jonathan and I want to assure you that the PDP will take over Oke Mosan in May,” he said.
