Nationwide protest: Amnesty Int’l calls on security agents to ‘cease fire’

A civic organization, Amnesty International Nigeria has called on security agents across the country to cease the ongoing brutality against peaceful protesters who have taken to the streets to call for better governance in Nigeria.

The group made this call on Wednesday via its official Twitter handle which said

“Amnesty International is calling on Nigerian security forces to end ongoing attack on protesters at Unity Fountain, Abuja and across the country. Protest is a human right and use of excessive force on protesters is unlawful”

Daily Times had earlier reported President Muhammadu Buhari’s swift response to ongoing nationwide protests by deploying security troops to arrest any persons directly or indirectly involved in the peaceful demonstration.

The group, which had earlier tweeted its view with regard to the ongoing protests held that protests represent one’s fundamental human rights as a bonafide citizen of the country who enjoys his/her own inalienable rights.

The demonstration, which was originally designed to be peaceful, doesn’t seem to be panning out that way as security agents are reportedly exerting full weight to forcibly end the campaign by the protesters, as evidenced by the brutality at Unity Fountain.

Elsewhere in Lagos, security agents have been reported to have released teargas into the civilian population, turning the affair into another python dance.
