Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido, has signed into law the 2018 budget, with a promise to complete all ongoing projects, in the council, by July this year.
Candido , while signing the budget into law yesterday.stated that the exercise was a demonstration of democracy in action, adding that in a democratic setting, nothing should be hidden.
Recall that the council had presented a budget of N6, 921,263,402.00, bn tagged, ‘Budget of Reality and Consolidation’, aimed at addressing the growing needs of the communities, and built on the existing foundation.
According to Candido, “It is with great joy that we are witnessing the signing into law of the 2018 budget for the area council. We chose to do it this way, because it is democracy in action, there is nothing to hide,” he said.
The chairman added that assenting to the budget is a clear demonstrate that the administration was ready to hit the ground and commence infrastructural service to the people.
He explained that the previous year had issues that led to the stagnation of the last budget implementation, which, according to him, had been addressed, while the pace is clear for provision of service to the masses.
“With the signing of the budget, it has demonstrated that we are ready to commence our infrastructure service to the people. We may have had issues that led to the stagnation of the last budget implementation. It was hindered because of the flow of our revenue particularly the tenement rate.”
The chairman maintained that after studying the situation, the council is now back to the field to collect rates that would enable it discharge its constitutional mandate of service delivery.
“Now, we are back to the field as far as tenement rate is concerned. So, assenting to the budget today will mean that from March, this year, we believe that things will have been getting better from the
field and the we will have every reason to deliver services to the residences, as expected of us,” he said.
He charged financial managers of the council to ensure that due process is followed in the discharge of their duties. “All the financial managers must be prudent, diligent and disciplined in the
discharge of their duties.
We should not do anything contrary to regulations and due process must be adhered to in contract process,” he stressed.
He added that every aspect of contract procedure must be strictly followed, warning that there should be no cutting of corners, just as he charged the councilors to ensure that their wards or constituencies are not shortchanged in the distribution of projects this year.
