Sevilla coach, Matias Almeyda has been handed a seven-match suspension following his red card during last weekend’s La Liga draw against Alaves.
The 52-year-old Argentine was dismissed for protesting a decision before marching onto the pitch at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, where he confronted the referee for more than a minute.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee outlined the sanctions imposed on the coach. Almeyda received a two-match ban for his protests, one match for failing to leave the pitch after being sent off, three matches for what was described as an “attitude of contempt” towards match officials, and an additional game for unsporting conduct.
The suspension means Almeyda will miss half of Sevilla’s remaining fixtures this season. The club currently sits 13th in the La Liga standings, just two points above the relegation zone with 14 matches left to play.
Sevilla will now have to navigate a crucial phase of the campaign without their head coach on the touchline.
