ALGON partners NGOs to tackle insecurity in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa state chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has restated its commitment to partner non-governmental organisations to tackle insecurity in the state.
State ALGON Chairman, Aminu Maifata, made the disclosure on Sunday in Lafia, at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the Action Aid Nigeria (AAN) and Global Peace Development (GPD).

The ALGON chairman, who is also the Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, was represented by the Secretary of Lafia Local Government Area, Abubakar Lamino.
According to him, the partnership becomes imperative due to the rising cases of rape and other Gender-Based Violence (GBV) involving minors.
Maifata said the increasing rate of crime and other vices in the state need a collective effort to curb the menace, hence their resolve to collaborate with non-governmental organisations and other groups.
He explained that the council would set up a local conflict management alliance in all communities in Lafia towards the smooth implementation of the community action and response team already established by the two organisations.
“We are going to make sure that we implement the community action and response team already established in two communities in Lafia by you in all our communities to help in addressing the increasing cases of rape, kidnapping, armed robbery and other forms of crimes being committed.
“I call on all not to relent, but to continue in assisting the security agencies in fishing out the perpetrators of these evil acts committed in our communities” he said.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Global Peace Development, Mr. Ebruke Esike, commended the council and other stakeholders for their efforts so far.
He said the steps taken by the stakeholders would help in addressing the devastating and inhumane acts of rape and other security challenges currently affecting the society.
Esike said as part of measures to check cases of kidnapping, communal crisis, rape and other criminal activities, there was need to focus on programmes aimed at fostering mutual trust between security agencies and communities.
The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Department of State Services (DSS), community and religious leaders as well as the media.
