Akwa Ibom Police crack down on unauthorized VIP escorts

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced a series of strict enforcement directives aimed at strengthening discipline within the Force and protecting public safety.
The measures as stated in a release signed by DSP Timfon John, LLB, Anipr, Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command and made available to the Daily Times on Tuesday 2nd December 2025, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, expressed concern over the increasing violation of the Inspector-General’s directive against policemen escorting unauthorized VIPs.
 He ordered that any officer found providing such illegal escort services be immediately arrested, disarmed, and subjected to orderly room trial. “Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) will be held directly accountable for the misconduct of their subordinates.” He said
CP Azare reiterated the Akwa Ibom State Government’s long-standing ban on masquerade activities, citing their recent association with violence, rioting, and disturbances of public order.
He directed security formations statewide to enforce the restriction strictly, warning that any officer who fails to act, or compromises enforcement, will face disciplinary action.
The CP strongly condemned the spread of fake news and misinformation, especially online, warning that such actions can incite panic and disrupt peace.
He instructed officers to improve community engagement, monitor disinformation sources, and ensure prosecution of offenders responsible for circulating fabricated content.
As part of broader efforts to address cultism, robbery, and gang activity, the Command has also launched intensified stop-and-search operations, surveillance activities, and targeted operations at known criminal hotspots.
 The CP emphasized that these actions must remain lawful, professional, and respectful of citizens’ rights.
The Command disclosed that one David Effiong, who was found disrupting public peace while dressed in full masquerade regalia, has been taken into custody and will be prosecuted.
 Additionally, individuals arrested for fake news creation and circulation  included; Lexis Christopher, Stephen Okwen, and Miss Favour Emenyi (15), a student of Mary Hanney Secondary School, Oron, are also being arraigned in court.
CP Azare restated his commitment to sustaining Akwa Ibom’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria. He urged citizens to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities promptly, assuring the public of continued cooperation with other security agencies.
