Akpabio breaks silence on alleged illness, meets Gbenga Daniel, others in UK

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed reports of being hospitalised in London, the United Kingdom, saying such claims are the product of misleading social media narratives.

Akpabio made the clarification during a meeting in London with the Chairman of Senate Committee on Navy and former governor of Ogun State, Chief Gbenga Daniel.

Daniel, who represents Ogun East on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said his visit was to formally notify the Senate President of his return to Nigeria to participate in the August 16 bye-election for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State.

The seat became vacant following the death of the former Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, Honourable Adewumi Onanuga.

“I am here to formally inform you, Mr. Senate President, that I will be returning to Nigeria to partake in the August 16th bye-elections into the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, which was declared vacant after the death of late Honourable Onanuga.

“Your Excellency, the news out there is that you have been indisposed; but seeing you here now paints a very different picture. Congratulations, Your Excellency,” Daniel said.

According to a statement issued by Akpabio’s Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, the Senate President thanked Daniel for the visit and expressed confidence in the APC’s chances at the polls.

“With the commitments and support of Governor Dapo Abiodun, your good self and other stakeholders of our party in the state, we will retain the House of Representatives seat at the end of the election,” Akpabio said.

He further told the former Ogun State governor that: “Let me congratulate you in advance, because you have all it takes to retain that Federal Constituency seat for our great party. You are from there and interestingly, the governor is also from there. So, I don’t harbour any fear.”

Addressing the health rumours, Akpabio said:

“If you listen to the social media, you will go to war.”

The Senate President also received parents of Rivers South’s Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, Dr. and Dr. (Mrs.) Iquo Ekpenyong, during Senator Daniel’s visit.
