Aiyetoro Town Takes a Short Break — What It Means for the Future

On the 20th of August, 2025, superstar Nigerian filmmaker and producer, Funke Akindele announced on her X platform that the Youtube blockbuster, Aiyetoro Town (Season 2) “is going on a very short break”, with the actual return date unstated.

This announcement was enough to spark mixed reactions across Nollywood’s digital streets with fans of the sitcom curious as to the reason for the break.  While some expressed playful impatience, others offered support. But everyone agreed on one thing: the story of Aiyetoro Town is too engaging to let go.

Good movies are addictive; you always never want to let it go. And long after you are done, it stays with you for a lifetime. Aiyetoro Town has become such type of movie and so it is understandably hard to come to terms with the fact that the sitcom which has kept families in weekly anticipation will go on an indefinite break.

“We can’t thank you enough for loving, streaming, and talking about our story… this break won’t be long, we promise!” she wrote, urging viewers to relive Episodes 1–9 while waiting for the next chapter.

For fans who have followed Aiyetoro Town since its debut in 2019 and knowing the capability of “Aunty Jenifa” as she is fondly called, this pause feels less like a disruption and more like a chance to build anticipation. And this begs the question: What is Funke Akindele cooking again?

From Jenifa’s Diary to Aiyetoro Town

Aiyetoro Town is a direct spin-off from Funke Akindele’s award-winning Jenifa’s Diary, one of the longest-running Nigerian sitcoms of the 2010s where she earned the famous nickname, Jenifa. enifa’s Diary explores the struggles of a quirky girl trying to find her way in the city of Lagos, having left her village— Aiyetoro— for greener pastures.

In Aiyetoro Town, the play shifts ground, although with Jenifa still the main character, it expands to a fictional Yoruba town, blending humour with sharp social commentary. From petty rivalries to community dramas, the didactic series captures the everyday realities of Nigerians in a way that feels authentic yet entertaining.

The cast of many up-and-coming skit makers also gives it a unique perspective. It is this balance of laughter and relatability that explains why the series quickly became a digital hit on YouTube, pulling in millions of views and sparking online conversations week after week.

Funke Akindele: Nollywood’s Storytelling Powerhouse

Funke Akindele is no stranger to sustaining audience attention. Beyond television, her film record is nothing short of remarkable. In 2020, Omo Ghetto: The Saga became the highest-grossing Nollywood film at the time, a record she broke again in 2022 with Battle on Buka Street. And then in 2023 with A Tribe Called Judah. Not to forget her 2024 cinema movie, Everybody Loves Jenifa.

These milestones not only cemented her as a box-office queen but also showcased her versatility as a filmmaker who can make both streetwise comedies and socially resonant dramas work on the big stage.

With over two decades in the industry, Funke Akindele has built a reputation for spotting everyday Nigerian realities and turning them into powerful, relatable stories. Aiyetoro Town is no different— a community-based narrative that doubles as cultural preservation and entertainment.

What Next for Aiyetoro Town?

It is understandable that fans are worried about the presumed short break, but if history is anything to go by, Funke Akindele has proven it, time and time again that she always comes back stronger.

She rarely slows down without having a bigger vision in mind. The short break could signal a creative reset, a chance to scale up production, introduce new storylines, or even open doors to international collaborations.

In truth, this intermission might be the build-up to something greater and fans are already bracing themselves for a bigger, bolder Aiyetoro Town when the curtain rises again. And as drama track says; drama plenty for Aiyetoro town and we have not even seen half of it yet.

Until then, lovers of the sitcom and the producer in particular should keep holding on to the already released episodes and hope that the drama returns sooner than expected.
